A Global Energy Shift
300 million solar systems. One new direction for energy.
The global energy transition is entering a new phase.
At Climate Week NYC 2026, the Global Solar Council, Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, Solar Citizens and Climate Parliament renewed a global ambition: 300 million customer-sited solar systems by 2030.
The initiative, known as 300 Million Solar Homes, is designed to accelerate the deployment of solar across homes, apartments, small businesses and community buildings around the world.
The numbers are significant.
Approximately 150 million customer-sited solar systems are expected globally by the end of 2026. Under current conditions, that figure could reach around 225 million by 2030.
The initiative therefore seeks to unlock an additional 75 million systems.
The target represents an estimated 1.8–2.1 terawatts of distributed solar capacity and could potentially bring solar generation to more than one billion people.
But the significance isn't simply the number of panels.
It is where those panels are located — and who controls the energy they produce.
For more than a century, electricity has largely followed a one-way model:
Power station → grid → consumer.
Distributed solar begins to reverse that relationship.
A home can become a generator.
A business can become a generator.
A community building can become a generator.
And millions of these individual systems can collectively become an important part of the electricity system.
The initiative is therefore not simply proposing more solar.
It is proposing a more distributed energy architecture.
